The following journal contains talks on religion, belief, etc. Proceed at own risk.

Going from my philosophy class to the bus, I noticed a crowd in the Free Speech area of my college. Who was there?

A small group of extreme Christians were there, arguing that, “if you don’t believe in exactly what we say, you’re a sinner and are going to go to Hell.”

Normally I’d stop to listen, and probably argue some, but I needed to catch the bus.

I missed the bus, seeing it drive off as I ran to it, to late.

So, I returned to the Free Speech Area to listen, moving to a slightly smaller group.

Now, most of the arguing was not taking place between Christians and non-Christians, but rather the extreme ones, and moderate ones.

That helped me think better of humanity, honestly.

I didn’t argue at all. I wanted to, but I just never got a chance. I saw a lot of logical flaws in their (the extreme ones) arguments.

I left when it started to just become a shouting match.

And of course, in my philosophy class, we had been talking about God and paradoxes, so my mind was on this stuff.

I am an atheist. Or, as Douglas Adams says, ‘a radical atheist.’ Simply to the fact I really don’t think there’s a god. I’ve thought about it, and most of the arguments I’ve seen for God are either logically flawed, or also require then to believe in a number of things, like Bigfoot, fairies, leprechauns, etc.

For example, one famous argument for the existence of God is that “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”

Saying that even though we have no definite proof of God, doesn’t mean God doesn’t exist.

But by that reasoning, you can use that to prove fairies exist. Or unicorns. Any number of things like that.

Absence of evidence is evidence of absence. If you can’t show something is/was there, then it wasn’t.

Heck, that’s the basis for our court systems almost. If you can’t prove that a suspect wasn’t where you claim they were, then they weren’t there. Absence of evidence is evidence of absence.

Does that mean believing in God is illogical? Well, yes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing.

Belief can provide comfort and hope, things we as humans need for survival. I find comfort in hope in the fact there’s no God. It makes me think that we are the masters of our own fate, and that it is up to us, not some superior being pulling the strings and watching us go.

But I’m human, I can empathasize. I know people find comfort in believing there is a big plan, that there’s something more then just the sum of our parts.

I suppose, it comes down to who one believes writes their lives. Is it God? Or is it themselves? Who is in control?

These are the questions we ask. And who's right? Well, we won't know until we're dead. And even then, we still might not.

“Isn’t it enough to believe that the garden is beautiful without having to believe there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”
- Douglas Adams, Last Chance to See

...there is evidence. There are many arguments on either side, but I believe that you are speaking of solid, totally-faithless proof. It is my belief that, for example, the existence of the universe itself is evidence of a creator (how precise our planet's orbit of the sun is so as to allow for the hospitable conditions on Earth for starters). And although "relics" are/were often shams, I think that there are things like the Shroud of Turin that can be called evidence, even if not "proof". So as such, a belief in God, right or wrong, is NOT illogical.

Anyway, respond how you want, although I don't like arguing about these things online, I just believed that your claim that belief is illogical needed to be disputed.

...and I think our RPs handle these things in a solid manner. Either side can be right in every RP from The Island to Spirit and Steam.

Actually, AGOI, there is a lot of proof. The problem is that most mainstream churches today do not teach the Word of God correctly. They say things and teach things that are not in the Bible or in the original manuscripts.

I can see why you and other people have trouble believing in God because you require tangible proof, and while there is tangible proof, most churches and religious officials do not teach it properly. In some cases it's because they don't know any better.

There's nothing illogical about believing in God. Nothing at all. There's a lot of so-called 'teachings' that people hear and speak that are NOT from God, and that make no sense. When the true word is spoken, it's so simple even a child can understand it, and it makes sense.

I'm willing to bet that I could answer a majority of the arguments you might have. Not all of them -- I'm not well-enough versed in the Word at this time.

But to say there's no evidence of God is ridiculous. There's evidence all around! There's a number of things in the Bible that were spoken of years before they came about being. There's a number of things that science cannot explain, that the Bible can -- and there's a number of places where science actually CONFIRMS what is in the Bible.

I'm serious. I've read it. And to read with understanding is a beautiful thing.

By the way, we ARE masters of our own fate. God does not ';pull the strings'. You make it sound as if we're all puppets. We are not. We were given freedom by God, a freedom of choice and what to believe.

If God wanted to force us all to believe, he could. Yet that is not love. God wants our love -- of our own free choice.

I hope it doesn't seem as if I'm biting your head off, but I simply cannot and never will agree with some of the things you said. There is solid, undeniable evidence. Some of the mainstream Biblical preachers don't always teach it correctly, and that's a sad thing.

One thing I will say, though, is that Christian's who tell people 'You're going to hell!' are idiots. Any true Christian -- by which I mean any Christian who has actually read the Bible -- knows there is only one Judge, and that it is never our place to judge others. Christ is the Judge.

It's not my place to judge your beliefs, and I don't. I disagree with what you think, but I wouldn't judge you for it.

If I could fave this journal, I would. I agree with you. ^^

I think it's simply a human thing to believe in a God, or something of the sort. It gives us hope, which can sometimes be more powerful than any medicine or machine. It also gives us a scapegoat or an excuse.

Like my most hated one: "So-and-so died because God needed another rose in his garden." (I suppose that's supposed to make one feel better, at least as a kid, buuuuuut...not me.)

Humans are also equipped to find patterns, to find order in the chaos of our world. Sometimes, we attribute events as being related, just because they stick out in our mind.
(I'm taking Psychology; can you tell? XD)

I could argue more, but...I shouldn't argue so early in the morning. ^^;

Still, just rest assured that you have people who agree with you!

"There's an old legend, of a man named Icarus.
He turned his dreams into wings, and flew, but fell when he got too close to the sun...
I shall be the new Icarus.
But I will not burn.
I was born from the sun."

Ahhh religion, always a fun thing to debate about XD

I do love a good debate but considering i'm on at the public library with 12 minutes left before my computer logs me off i'll just say that we all have the right to believe what we want so you're not in the wrong for posting your beliefs even if I don't agree with them :D

I've had lots of friends on both sides of the argument I think we all should be judged on what we do with our time on Earth rather than what we state publicly as our beliefs.

And now the computer is about to log me off...Oh noes!
